Manual Lymphatic Drainage

  • Description
  • Background

The Lymphatic system is best thought of as your body’s ‘front line of defence’ in eliminating toxins & warding off infection.

Our Lymph glands, located at the neck, armpits & groin, are connected by a series of vessels, which manage all the fluid levels in our body & filter out bacteria through the spleen, thymus & lymph nodes into the blood.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, rythmic, precise hand movement therapy that completely relaxes the nervous system & aids the body’s immune system. Through mild stretches, sequences & pressure on the lymph wall, conjested vessels are stimulated promoting a strong flow & efficient removal of waste. The treatment is extremely calming, uses a light touch & is suggested for those recovering from sore throats, colds, infections, ongoing tiredness, excess fluid retention & swelling, low immunity & the physically inactive.

Pioneered during the 1930's, Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is now recognised as a tool for managing lymphedema & Therapists receive certification through specialised MLD organisations.

MLD is a gentle massage technique using circular movements on the lymph nodes which act as an external pump, plling lymphatic fluid through the lymph channels, enhancing the release of toxins. It's worth noting ,this is not a massage as the movements are focused on areas where the lymph is blocked & is specifically designed to increase the flow of lymph fluid. Many find the treatment useful for lymphedema.
